A chartered accountant, Mark brings to the Bank more than three decades of financial services experience having been a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) for over 25 years before retiring from the partnership in 2017.

During his extensive career, Mark worked at the highest level on the restructuring of financial services organisations within insurance, banking and fund management, led PwC’s team working for HM Treasury on the rescue of the Royal Bank of Scotland and for the Irish Treasury in developing its ‘bad bank’, NAMA. Since retiring, he has been a senior adviser to UK Government Investments and taken up a number of board non-executive roles across the insurance and real estate sectors.

Commenting on Mark’s appointment, Roger Weatherby, Chief Executive, says: ‘I am delighted that Mark has agreed to join our Board. We will be able to draw on his considerable risk and regulatory experience, as well as the wealth of knowledge he has forged working for governments and financial institutions in the UK and internationally.’

In May, Weatherbys Private Bank announced that Quentin Marshall, Managing Director, will succeed Roger Weatherby as Chief Executive, who in turn will become Chairman in early 2024.

Quentin, who joined the Bank in 2014, currently oversees the two core businesses of the Bank – its Private and Racing banks. He has had an illustrious private banking career spanning more than 35 years having previously worked at Coutts and UBS Wealth Management, where he was integral to its Family Office creation.

An industry veteran and fellow of the CISI, Nick, who will be based in London, has enjoyed a longstanding career in private banking and wealth management having worked previously at Coutts and Arbuthnot Latham.

Over a 25-year period at Coutts, Nick held various managing director roles, leading its UK Regional Business, its London Entrepreneurs and its Sports & Entertainment teams. In his most recent private banking role, he was Head of Business Development at Arbuthnot Latham for four years.

Nick’s appointment comes just a month after the Bank hired two private bankers to meet the needs of its expanding client base. Anthony Rawlinson joined Weatherbys from Brewin Dolphin and Maya Lewis joined from Investec where she advised sports and entertainment clients for almost a decade.

Ollie Barnett, Director at Weatherbys Private Bank, said: “It is an exciting time of growth for our Bank. We hired 89 new staff last year and we have already made some key appointments this year. We are delighted to welcome Nick to the team – his experience, energy and passion for private banking and client relationships are a real asset.”

The private bank, which is part of the Weatherbys family-owned business founded in 1770, continues to meet the challenges of a changing world, including investing in its digital capabilities and its Creating The Future initiative to ensure a better place for families and future generations.

Anthony Rawlinson also joins Weatherbys as a Private Banker after working for two private families in the creation of their respective family offices. He previously served as a discretionary portfolio manager at Coutts and as head of private banking for Standard Chartered Bank in Abu Dhabi after an initial career in Asian investment banking for Jardine Fleming.

The Bank appointed 77 new bank staff in 2022. This included the appointment of Daniel Porteous as a Private Banker based in its new Manchester office as Weatherbys seeks to grow its client base in the North West, and several hires for the Bank’s business development team as it continues to build its private client proposition.

Ollie Barnett, Director at Weatherbys Private Bank, said: “We continue to live in challenging times and relationship banking, where we can look after the needs of our clients on a truly bespoke basis, has never been so important. It is why we have hired more bankers in the past year than ever, and why I am delighted to welcome Anthony and Maya, with their solid private banking experience, to our team.”

Daniel Porteous, an experienced Private Banker, joins from Brown Shipley where he was a director and part of a team advising its high-net-worth clients in the north of England. During his 15-year banking career he has held roles at Swedish private bank Handelsbanken and Coutts.

The new role in the North West coincides with several hires for the business development team as we continue to grow our private client proposition. These include two new Senior Business Development Executive appointments. Martin Hillyer joins having spent most of his 30-year career with Barclays Bank where he held several key positions including Head of Key Clients within its wealth division. Andrew Turner, who joins from Handelsbanken, had previously spent a decade at Barclays Premier & Wealth.

Ollie Barnett, Director at Weatherbys Private Bank, said: “We have been patiently looking for the right person to help us build on our existing client base and professional contacts in the North West. Daniel, with his private banking experience in the North of England, is the perfect fit. 2021 was another year of strong growth for Weatherbys Private Bank and our deposits increased to record levels. We believe this was underpinned by our dedication to exceptional client service; indeed, a recent survey revealed that 97% of our clients would refer friends and family to the bank. These latest appointments support our ambition to expand our private banking proposition by providing an unparalleled customer experience.”

Jane has worked in the financial services industry for over 30 years in both operational and strategic roles. She has extensive experience in digital and operational change and was responsible for the integration of two major investment management businesses into Investec Wealth & Investment.

As Chief Executive Officer of Investec Click & Invest, Jane launched from scratch an award-winning online discretionary investment management business. Following this, she was Strategic Transformation Director at Investec Wealth & Investment, with oversight of several major operational management projects. More recently Jane was appointed COO of the consumer website, Boring Money.

She said: “I think Weatherbys is a fantastic organisation. It has a real trusted relationship with its clients – something that takes many years to build. As a result it is able to listen to clients to understand what they want and need, which is vitally important when looking to the future.

“My experience in digital wealth management means that I see great opportunities to enhance the client experience by using digital technology to underpin these relationships and at the same time bring operational efficiencies.”

Roger Weatherby, CEO of Weatherbys Bank, added: “I am delighted that Jane is joining Weatherbys. She has great experience as a leader of a digital business in the financial services industry, which will be invaluable as we continue to improve the online experience for Weatherbys’ clients. Her appointment will bring a valuable additional perspective to the board.”

William has more than a decade’s experience in private banking in both client-facing investment advisory and portfolio optimisation roles. He has strong quantitative expertise, having gained an MSci in Mathematics from Imperial College London. He spent more than seven years at Barclays as lead analyst for its Strategic Asset Allocations (SAAs) – the blueprints used to manage around £13bn of multi-asset funds and portfolios. He joins from Oxford Risk and replaces John Butters who has left the bank to run his family business.

Nathan Valbonesi, Associate Director at Weatherbys Private Bank, says: “William’s quantitative analysis skillset and portfolio expertise will bring a new dimension to our passive investment proposition used by the majority of our clients. We are thrilled that he has joined to turbo-charge our Investment & Wealth Advice Service.”

The appointment comes following a strong year of growth for the private bank as it continues to meet the needs of its expanding client base – more than 50 new staff were appointed in 2021.

Ollie Barnett, Director, adds: “For Weatherbys Private Bank, 2021 was another year of growth. Our deposits grew 29%, an impressive number. We operate a very conservative balance sheet, with a huge amount of liquidity maintained at the Bank of England. Our focus on providing access to a knowledgeable and responsive team when needed continues to win in the marketplace.

“The housing market has proven resilient, meaning demand for sensibly structured loans has also been strong. Stock markets have been robust despite the current socio-economic climate. Their performance has reminded us that we should first have a financial plan and then stick to it, rather than trying to second-guess the future.”
